Heklina is known as the hostess, producer, and creator of Trannyshack, San Francisco’s legendary drag performance night club, which for over twelve years shocked and delighted packed audiences every Tuesday night at midnight. Defying all expectations, Trannyshack incorporated everything from low brow trash to high brow performance art, and became famous (or, infamous) worldwide as the quintessential San Francisco experience. No visit to the City was complete without a stop at Trannyshack. The club was featured in Out (which named it one of the top 10 reasons to move to San Francisco), Genre, Instinct, and Paper magazines and won numerous Best of the Bay awards, and was been filmed for an VH1 documentary and an independent feature length documentary , titled “Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story”. Trannyshack is now branching out it’s empire, with shows booked year round all over the world.
Heklina gained fame as Trannyshack’s erstwhile MC, keeping a tight rein on the chaos with her unflappable humor and sparkling wit. She is also a popular hostess for hire around the City, and has graced the Folsom St. Fair, Castro St. Fair, Gay Pride Main Stage, Castro Theater, and Halloween Main Stage, among others too numerous to mention. In addition to this she has been a tireless fundraiser MC, hosting, among others, benefits for PAWS, Project Open Hand, Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic, Bay Positives, Lyric, Rocket Dog Rescue, The AIDS Housing Alliance, the AIDS Emergency Fund, the UCSF Positive Health Project, Rescue Animal Shelter, Community United Against Violence, and Marriage Equality. She has been seen on the E! Entertainment Network, “The Cho Show”, VH1, “Singled Out”, Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show”, BBC Television’s “Around the World in 80 Raves”, the Scissor Sister’s “Filthy Gorgeous” video, and as a guest on the Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake shows. She was voted Community Grand Marshal of the 2004 San Francisco GLBTQ Pride Parade and was the subject of two documentaries in the 2005 Frameline SF Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. One of these, the comprehensive Trannyshack documentary,”Filthy Gorgeous: The Trannyshack Story”, played in festivals around the world. Heklina travels with the Trannyshack brand as much as possible, and has produced shows in LA, New York City, Portland, London, Seattle, Waikiki, Santa Fe, New Orleans, Reno, and many more to come.
